IPOD Reset

IPOD reset allows you to restore factory setting when your iTunes cannot do it. Unfortunately, it will erase all documents, photos, music and any other downloads you added after your purchase. However, this can only be done on IPOD shuffle 1st and 2nd generations or the IPOD software versions 1.1.5 and 1.0.3.

This reset for IPODs should only be used under the following circumstances:

  • Music cannot be played
  • iTunes cannot restore the problem
  • iTunes does not recognize the IPOD
  • IPOD does not show up in the device managers or My Computer on Macs or Windows based PCs
  • The IPOD is in either recovery or USB DFU device modes

To start IPOD resets, you must be the administrator. Resetting may not work, so servicing may be required. However, in order to start, you must have either Mac OS 10.3.9 or +, Windows 2000 (service pack 4) or Windows XP (service pack 2). Windows Vista is not currently supported.

Begin your reset by downloading the iPOD Reset Utility from the Apple website, following the instructions accordingly. Shut down all unnecessary programs on your desktop or laptop. Open the utility and connect your IPOD to the computer. Then click the reset button on your IPOD, and enter your name and password. Once the utility loads, you may be asked by your computer to go through the new hardware wizard. If so, only click next and allow the wizard to run through and click the reset button again. Once the utility has finished loading the necessary software, close it down and open your iTunes to check that the reset has worked. If it is still not working then contact your IPOD customer service outlet for immediate servicing.

Resetting your IPOD can only be done if you own an IPOD Shuffle, 1st or 2nd generations. It requires patience, using the IPOD Reset Utility from the Apple website. It is important to choose the version that is compatible to your computer’s operating system, and is not yet available for Windows Vista owners. The procedures are simple to follow, but may be interrupted by your computer’s new hardware wizard, which has to be dealt with according to the instructions given. All other instructions are straight forward, and in the majority of cases, the reset will be successful, but you will lose any extra software and files that you downloaded prior to this.
